If you’re wondering what to do in NYC in 48 hours, the key is staying central, booking ahead, and planning by neighborhood. A quick trip to New York City can either feel rushed or well spent, and with the right plan, 48 hours is plenty of time to see, eat, and experience the best of the city.
Here’s exactly what to do in NYC in 48 hours for a productive, enjoyable weekend.
Where to Stay for 48 Hours in NYC
When planning what to do in NYC in 48 hours, location matters more than anything. We stayed at the Lotte New York Palace in Midtown, steps from St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Fifth Avenue. Being central cuts down on transportation time and allows you to walk almost everywhere. We only ubered one time the whole trip because it was freezing after the Broadway show.
The rooms are spacious by New York City standards, which makes a difference on a quick weekend trip. For a short stay, convenience always wins.
Where to Eat
A strong food plan is essential when deciding and you need reservations ahead of time. Reservations fill quickly, so secure your top choices early and check websites as they have specific ways to make reservations.
Monkey Bar was ton our list, but a 2 hour wait was a but much. The monkey bread was easily the best bite of the weekend and worth ordering for the table. The Louis Vuitton Cafe was a highlight. Tip: walk in and as about reservations the day before, we were able to get in easily.
We also dined at The Mark Restaurant (get your wallet ready) and The Plaza Bar for sliders. Both are polished, reliable uptown options and easy additions to a 48-hour NYC itinerary. Don’t forget Bergdorf Goodman’s for a ladies lunch, tea or dessert.
Shopping in NYC
Shopping is a highlight especially if you’re staying in Midtown. Fifth Avenue is walkable and efficient. We stopped into Louis Vuitton and Bergdorf Goodman, but the experience of walking the avenue is just as memorable as the stores themselves. We walked the Upper East Side (my fav shopping spot) and stopped into Tuckernuck and Zitomer, a highlight. Next trip I will make it back to Chelsea Market, Hudson Yards, and Bond Street.
If you’re limited to 48 hours in New York City, focus on one area and explore it well instead of crossing town multiple times.
Broadway Plays: A Must
No list of what to do in NYC in 48 hours feels complete without seeing a Broadway play. We saw & Juliet, and the energy carried through the entire performance. Choosing one show and building your evening around it makes the weekend feel intentional rather than rushed. SKIP the restaurants in Times Square- plan ahead and eat early. For last-minute Broadway tickets, check the official box office the morning of the show, then look at TodayTix for same-day drops or digital rush.
